Dear Evan Hansen is a popular musical that came out in July, 2015. The story follows a high school senior who struggles with social anxiety and who then gets caught in a web of lies after a classmate’s suicide, leading to an exploration of loneliness, connection, and truth in the digital age. Dear Evan Hansen has won a number of Tony Awards and has become known as one of the most relatable musicals to date, as many teenagers at the time came forward with their own stories, all thanks to the movement sparked by the musical's “You Will Be Found”.
Delving deeper into the plot, Evan Hansen (a bullied 17-year-old) suffers from a severe case of social anxiety and depression, as well as a recently broken arm, and is assigned by his therapist to write letters to himself, reminding him how “today will be a good day” and why. His overworked mother, Heidi Hansen, encourages him to try to connect with kids at his school by getting them to sign his cast. Meanwhile, Cynthia and Larry Murphy struggle to connect with their own 17-year-old son, Connor, a sullen and equally depressed drug abuser. Evan runs into Connor Murphy, who misinterprets his awkwardness for hostility and pushes him to the ground. Connor's sister, Zoe, who Evan is infatuated with, feels obliged to apologize for her brother's behavior. Evan writes a letter to himself in the school library, wondering how he could talk to Zoe and if anyone at school would notice if he disappeared. Connor bumps into Evan again, this time ironically offering to sign Evan's cast. He finds Evan's letter on the printer and, upon seeing Zoe's name, becomes furious and storms out, taking the letter with him. Days later, Evan is called to the principal's office, where Connor's parents tell him that their son has died by suicide. They found Evan's letter in Connor's pocket and mistakenly believed Connor had written it, indicating a close friendship between the two. Connor's signature on Evan's cast strengthens the Murphys' belief, despite Evan's fumbling attempts to explain what really happened. From there, the lies begin and only continue to grow.
